Frequently Asked Questions:
Is beta carotene in Basic One?
Yes, vitamin A, the first ingredient on the label, is beta carotene. The FDA specifications for vitamin labels require the ingredients to be listed by the vitamin's name. Beta carotene is a provitamin to vitamin A and is actually converted by the body into vitamin A.
Does Basic One contain natural vitamin E?
All of the multivitamin and mineral formulations contain d-alpha tocopherol, the natural form of vitamin E. Studies have shown that natural vitamin E is not only better absorbed, but also better retained in the body than the synthetic form, dl-alpha tocopherol. (Note: To remember the difference between natural d-alpha tocopherol and synthetic dl-alpha tocopherol, think "d" for delivers and "dl" for delivers less).
The tablet size is too big. Can I cut or crush the tablets to make them smaller?
Yes. It is safe to crush or cut the tablets into smaller size. However, the minerals in vitamins do not taste good. Be aware that if the tablet is crushed it will be difficult to mask the flavor if adding it to something else.
Is Basic One soy, peanut, garlic, yeast, gluten, corn and pepper-free?
Yes. However, we outsource the actual production of our products to a manufacturing facility that produces other supplements. It is possible that other products run on the machines might contain any of these ingredients. While the equipment is cleaned completely between different runs in order to avoid cross contamination, the potential is still there.
Is this product dairy-free?
Yes, Basic One Iron Free is dairy-free.
What are EPA and DHA?
There are three types of omega-3 fatty acids: eicopentaenoic, docosahexaenoic and alpha-linolenic acid. Eicopentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are the long chain omega-3 fatty acids commonly found in fish. Much of the research on omega-3 and its ability to reduce cardiovascular disease risk factors has been found with the consumption of these two fatty acids. Alpha-linolenic acid, a short chain omega-3 fatty acid, comes from plants and includes flaxseed, walnut, and canola oils made from nuts and seeds, as well as tofu and other forms of soybeans.
Why does Cooper Complete Advanced Omega-3 contain a 5-to-1 ratio of EPA to DHA?
EPA is vitally important for brain and nerve stimulation. DHA is thought to constitute the "building blocks" of the brain, forming about 8 percent of the brain by weight. Because our body can easily convert EPA into DHA (if there's a DHA deficiency), but cannot easily convert DHA into EPA, we provide a 5-to-1 ratio of EPA to DHA.
I've heard that omega-3 can come in several different forms. What form is Cooper Complete Advanced Omega-3?
Cooper Complete Advanced Omega-3 is concentrated fish oil in the ethyl ester (EE) format. (Re-esterification is a step that takes EE fish oil and turns it into the triglyceride (TG) format.) Manufacturing a product in the TG state means further processing and yield losses so that the subsequent product is significantly more expensive. The TG form also causes additional "burp back" in many people.
I am allergic to fish. Is it OK for me to take this product?
No. It would not be advisable for you to take the Advanced Omega-3 product if you have such a condition.
I already eat a lot of fish. Should I take this fish oil supplement?
Cooper Complete Advanced Omega-3 contains a 60 percent concentration of EPA and DHA, compared to most products having a 30 percent concentration. The average American eats fish once every 11 days. Much of the fish consumed in diets is farm and/or fresh water raised and has low levels of omega-3 fatty acids. However, if you already eat four or more servings of fatty types of fish per week - such as salmon, Arctic char, trout or tuna - you may not need additional omega-3 in your diet.
Is it safe to consume Cooper Complete Advanced Omega-3 supplements if I suffer from atrial fibrillation?
Yes. Studies indicate that omega-3 fatty acids may reduce the risk of sudden cardiac death by 42 percent to 90 percent by stabilizing the rhythm of the heart.
Why does Cooper Complete Advanced Omega-3 contain soybean and canola oil?
To prevent oxidation of the bulk fish oil, we add an antioxidant blend to all steam deodorized fish oils. This antioxidant blend is the source of the soybean oil and canola oil you see listed on the Advanced Omega-3 ingredient panel. The soybean oil and canola oil are carrier oils for the tocopherol present in the antioxidant blend and serve no other purpose in the blend or in fish oil product. The antioxidant blend is present in very small amounts in the bulk oil (typically 5.0 mg/g) and the soybean and canola oils make up only a portion of this blend.
Are there purines in Cooper Complete Advanced Omega-3?
Purines are nitrogen-containing compounds that can be broken down in the human body to form uric acid. If the kidneys can't effectively remove uric acid from the blood stream, the blood becomes saturated with it at which point the uric acid begins to crystallize in joints, most often in the big toe. Gout is the medical term for uric acid crystallization in joints and the accompanying symptoms of inflammation and severe pain.
One component of controlling this disease is to consume a low purine diet. While anchovies and sardines contain moderate to high levels of purines, fish oils derived from these species that are high in omega-3 fatty acids are often recommended because of their anti-inflammatory properties. Cooper Complete Advanced Omega-3 is highly refined, and when used as directed, should not be a significant source of purines. However, we have not previously tested for the presence of purines in our fish oil.
Is Cooper Complete Advanced Omega-3 cold pressed?
No. "Cold press" is a term usually reserved for manufacturing of olive oils. However, our product does undergo a winterization/cold filtration process. Similar to when we heat butter and put it in the refrigerator, the cold filtration process removes the solid part (stearines), leaving an esthetically pleasing product/oil (especially for those who refrigerate their capsules).
